Things to see in Perast: plan your views and boat trips

Two islets sit out in the bay, and that shapes every visit to Perast: one you can land on, the other you can only look at. Our Lady of the Rocks draws the boats and the crowds, while walled St George stays a view from the water or from the quay.

The mainland sights run along one waterfront street. Bujović Palace holds the Perast Museum, and the Church of St Nicholas rises nearby, its bell tower the best vantage point for framing both islands in a single look.

Budget your time loosely: the tower climb takes about an hour and a half of your day, the island church about an hour, and the museum roughly sixty minutes. Only the tower carries a small charge beyond the island trip, at about €2.

Our Lady of the Rocks, Perast: Boat, Church and Time Needed

A short boat ride from Perast lands you at this small island church, a compact Roman Catholic shrine with votive paintings and an attached museum room. Visitors should note boats and opening thin out outside the main season.

The bell tower is the reason to stop here: a tight, steep 55-metre climb that frames both islets in one view. If confined stairs put you off, the Zmajević Palace stairway gives a similar outlook for nothing.

Closed: Not open to visitors; monastery and grounds closed to the public

St George Island is a walled Benedictine monastery under cypress trees, but you cannot land — the visit is the view from a boat on Kotor Bay or free from the Perast quay.

Boats, islands and what to sort in advance

Our Lady of the Rocks is reached by boat from the waterfront, with group departures from €13 and private trips from €220. Booking arrangements are worth settling before you arrive. Outside the main season, boats and church opening can thin out, so check before counting on the crossing. St George Island is not open to landing, and operators run trips past it; the view costs nothing from the Perast quay. The museum and tower need no reservation.

The monastery island stays shut

St George Island cannot be visited: the Benedictine monastery and its grounds are closed to the public, so plan on seeing the cypress-covered walls from a boat or the shore instead. The Church of St Nicholas and Our Lady of the Rocks are open, though winter opening on the island is not guaranteed, making the mainland tower and museum the reliable stops when boats stop running.
