Kotor attractions: how to plan your sightseeing days
Kotor's sights divide neatly between the walled Old Town and the steep slope rising behind it. The fortress path above St John Mountain demands half a day and a serious pair of shoes; inside the walls, the Clock Tower, Pima Palace and Drago Palace take minutes each and cost nothing to look at.
Start where the town starts: the Sea Gate, set in the western walls with cannons beside the arch. Step through onto the Square of the Arms, which fills with tour groups when a cruise ship is in, so aim for early or late. The 1602 clock on the same square is a free orientation point.
St Tryphon's Cathedral anchors the Old Town and needs a cash payment at the door that covers the church, relic chapel and treasury, while the Cats Museum gathers antique prints and postcards in a small gallery. Between them, the Church of Saint Luke on Greca Square is generally free and takes fifteen to twenty minutes.
For the climb, the path to the fortress passes the Church of Our Lady of Remedy halfway up; check entry conditions and any path charge locally before setting out. Some ramparts are in poor repair and some bastions are closed, so start down before dark.

If you have one day in Kotor
Give the fortress climb priority and set aside half a day for the steep, stony path from the Old Town to St John fortress; some ramparts are in poor repair and some bastions are closed, so allow more time than you expect and descend before dark. Book ahead where you can.
Back inside the walls, St Tryphon's Cathedral is the old-town landmark: one cash payment covers the church, relic chapel and treasury, so bring small euro notes. Add the Sea Gate and Square of the Arms on the way through, and the Clock Tower as a free orientation stop. The Cats Museum fits into half an hour if the cathedral and the walk have left time.
